Zwolle, the capital of the province of Overijssel, is rich with history. Originally a place where traders frequently met, the city grew into existence due to the proximity of various waterways. The vivacious character of a trade city still is one of Zwolle’s important features.
The inner city has a medieval centre, a splendid theatre, scores of shops, excellent hotels and restaurants, and many beautiful parks. Zwolle is everything you might expect from a contemporary city that has kept the intimate feel of its medieval past. The historic gables, the city wall and watchtowers, the Sassenpoort (the only surviving city gate – Zwolle originally had eight), and a star-shaped moat, surrounded by long-standing buildings, are characteristic for Zwolle. The monumental patrician’s houses, splendid alleys and impressive ramparts invite you to explore the city.
During the “Tour de Hanze”, a historical city walk, the city guide will inform you about the history of Hanseatic Zwolle and you will visit places and buildings where you can sample the flavours of the past. The tour leads you along the Basilica of Onze Lieve Vrouw (Our Blessed Lady) with its Peperbus Tower and by the only remaining city gate - the 600-year-old Sassenpoort from which long ago boiling hot tar and feathers were poured, to fend off attackers. The experienced guide will tell you stories about the Hanseatic League, the many gables and varying architectural styles.
